Freshen Up Your Interiors: Easy Decorating Updates

Once the warm weather starts, I’m ready to make some changes around the house. Spring is a great time to organize and clean out the clutter you’ve been hanging onto. I like to tackle my garage, pantry and bedroom closet as those rooms tend to become the messiest over the winter months. Taking a load of donations to my local charity is such a great feeling! Since I put my house on the market earlier this year, all of my organizing happened before the official start of spring.

Once you feel organized, then you can start on some simple decorating updates. An easy way to freshen up your porch is with plants and flowers. I like a group of three pots - a small, medium and large. The Better Homes & Gardens brand at Walmart seems to always have a wide variety of pots at good prices. These plants were from a porch project we installed a few years ago and I found the pots at my local Lowe’s store. Two of them match and the third is a complementary design. We added in a water feature and a fun sculpture my client had.

Inside, pillows and a colorful blanket can give your family room a fresh new look. Even in the summer, I like curling up on the couch with a blanket in the evening. This green and orange palette is exactly what this beach house needed to wake up the neutral sectional. Don’t be afraid to mix shapes and sizes. If your rug is feeling a little tired, then let’s replace it. A new rug, in the right size, can do so much for a room. HomeGoods is a great place to find throws, pillows and rugs.

In the bedroom, I’m a big fan of keeping most of your bedding neutral and adding the personality with pillows, art and lamps. For this beach house bedroom, we used easy-to-clean quilts and shams with a large lumbar pillow in the prettiest floral fabric. Instead of custom, try finding two rectangle pillows or three small squares you can place together to re-create this same look.

A new shower curtain and towels can do wonders for your bathroom. One of my favorite design “hacks” is to use two ready-made drapery panels to give you a custom look for less. Use one tension rod for the panels and a second one for the liner. They’ll be two different heights, but as long as you leave the panels closed - no one will know. I purchased mine from Target.
