Stop Making This Mistake

One of the biggest decorating mistakes I see is the wrong size rug in a room. Like with most anything related to interior design, there aren’t any real rules when it comes to decorating, but with rugs there should be!

In the simplest of terms, the rug in your family room should go under each of the upholstered pieces at least 6” and ideally it would be a lot more. The edge of your rug should not be in front of your couch, sectional, chairs, loveseat, etc. A rug is meant to anchor a room, not be a “postage stamp” in the center.

I love browsing Zillow and here is where I found the worst offenders. If your rug looks like this, please go out today and buy a bigger rug!

For a dining room, ideally you want your rug to be 4’ wider and longer than your table. This gives each chair 2’ of space to slide out and not fall off the rug. And please don’t forget the end chairs, they deserve as much rug as the side chairs.

For a bedroom, be prepared for most of your rug to be under your bed. You want the rug to extend at least 2’ past your bed and I prefer the rug to be placed right in front of your nightstands. Apartment Therapy put together an amazing graphic to illustrate all of these suggestions.

Thank you for letting me get this off my chest!
