DIY vs. Hiring a Contractor: Pros and Cons of Bathroom Renovation

Embarking on a bathroom renovation project is an exciting endeavor. One of the crucial decisions you'll face is whether to take the DIY route or hire a contractor to handle the renovation. Each option has its own set of advantages and drawbacks. In this blog post, we'll explore the pros and cons of both approaches to help you make an informed choice that aligns with your goals, budget and lifestyle.

For my own home renovations, I took the DIY route by managing all the trades myself. The only actual “work” I did was some painting and light demo. For my custom clients, we’ve always hired licensed contractors and it was the right choice for them. Most were busy professionals who didn’t have the time or desire to take on any aspect of their renovation.

COST SAVINGS: One of the most enticing benefits of a DIY bathroom renovation is the potential for cost savings. By taking on the project yourself, you can eliminate contractor fees and have more to spend on materials and fixtures.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Managing your bathroom renovation allows you to acquire new skills and knowledge about construction, plumbing, tiling and more. It can be a rewarding learning experience and give you a sense of accomplishment.

FLEXIBILITY: When you have control over the renovation timeline, you can work at your own pace and accommodate your schedule.

EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE: Contractors bring specialized knowledge, experience and skills to the table. They have a deep understanding of construction codes and industry best practices. Their expertise can ensure a high-quality and long-lasting renovation.

TIME & EFFICIENCY: Contractors have the necessary resources and manpower to complete the renovation efficiently. They can save you valuable time, especially if you have a busy schedule or limited availability.

ACCESS TO TRADES: Hiring contractors gives you access to their network of tradespeople. They can help you negotiate better deals and manage the various aspects of the renovation.

Deciding between a DIY bathroom renovation and hiring a contractor is a personal choice that depends on your circumstances. If you are planning to move any walls or do some major changes to electrical or plumbing - then hire a contractor! They bring expertise, efficiency and peace of mind. DIY projects can offer cost savings, freedom and a sense of accomplishment, but they require a significant investment of time, effort and learning. Ultimately, assess your capabilities, consider the complexity of the project and weigh the pros and cons to make an informed decision that ensures a successful and satisfying bathroom renovation experience.

When I began renovating my master bathroom, I decided I was going to take EVERYTHING I learned and publish an online course for those who want to take on their own renovation project. In five, short videos I share everything from how to start your project to putting together a budget to getting everyone scheduled.
